How many countries are there?

As a politically interested person, I count 201 countries.

These are:

  • the 193 UN member states
  • 8 states that take part in or observe at least one UN specialized agency (Cook Islands, Hong Kong, Kosovo, Macau, Niue, Palestine, Taiwan, Vatican)

So you won’t find regions such as Transnistria or Northern Cyprus on this list. I’ve been to some of them but it is apolitical to recognise them as the UN is the only organisation that can recognise a territory as a country.
